First Major Achievement:
It didn’t take Lewis Hamilton long since the start of his professional F1 career in 2007 to get his hands on Drivers’ World Championship. Hamilton took the world crown in just his second season in the sport, driving for the McLaren-Mercedes team.
In his triumphant year, a fifth place finish in the final race of the season in Brazil earned him the point he needed to clinch the title. Lewis Hamilton became the first British driver to get his hands on the F1 Drivers’ World Championship since 1996, and he also became the youngest ever driver to win the Championship.
Career Successes
Another milestone in his early F1 career came in his very first season when he set records in the sport. At the end of the 2007 season he became the youngest ever driver to finish runner up in the championship. With a third placed finish in the very first race of the 2007 season, Hamilton’s competitive F1 debut, he became the youngest ever driver to lead the world championship as well.
The very first F1 victory for Hamilton came in the 2007 season when he took the chequered flag in Montreal for the Canadian Grand Prix, where he also took his first career Pole Position. He backed that up with a win in the USA as well and became only the second driver in the history of the sport to win more than one race in his debut season.
Also during a highly impressive first season behind the wheel in F1, Hamilton recorded nine podium finishes in a year, equalling the record for a British driver in the sport. He rounded out 2007 with four Grands Prix victories, equalling the record for the most wins in a debut season.
Lewis Hamilton was on the British New Year Honours list, receiving the OBE from the Queen. He finished runner up for the BBC’s prestigious Sports Personality of the Year award twice, in 2007 and 2008.
